Body Positivity, Body Acceptance & Body Neutrality

Body Positivity is a social movement that promotes equality and acceptance for bodies of all types and sizes. The body positivity movement rose in the 1960s and was created by and for those in marginalized bodies, including larger bodies, Black, queer, and disabled bodies to advocate for people who experience discrimination based on how they look. Body positivity focuses on shifting how you think about your body instead of changing your body itself.

Body acceptance is treating your body with respect and care, including all of your deepest insecurities. Through body acceptance, you reflect on why you feel negatively toward your body and how you can find peace with your body without needing to change it. You don’t have to be thrilled with your body every minute and still figure out how to accept it as it is.

Body neutrality is a philosophy that believes bodies are neither good nor bad instead of focusing on loving how your body looks no matter what or on accepting your body as it is. Body neutrality is also the idea that we can still care for our bodies even if we don’t view them positively, and it does not require that you love your body all the time. Body neutrality promotes the idea that physical appearance does not determine self-worth.

"Weight stigma can hurt more than just your feelings — the truth is that negative messages about weight are actually bad for your physical health.”

This quote from How Body Positivity Can Lead To Better Health covers ways you can tune out the negative messages on weight and embrace your body in its current state. Read this article from NPR and check out the ‘21-minute listen’ at the top of the article.

Writing to Robust Wellness

Expressive writing, like journaling, evokes mindfulness and helps writers remain present while keeping perspective. Journaling is an opportunity for emotional catharsis, strengthens our emotional and mental health, relieves stress and boosts our immune system, keeps our memory sharp, and emphasizes our pattern and growth in adversity.

We offer prompts for inspiration to keep a journal, and unearth how your lifestyle interweaves the ten wellness dimensions.

  • Physical & Educational

    Journal Prompt:

Recall the types of physical activities you had in school. Describe your memory of these activities and what they taught you about your body.

  • Physical & Social/Relational

    Journal Prompt:

What physical gesture has made you feel loved by family, friends, and partners?

How do you show your affection in physical ways to others?

  • Physical & Envronment

    Journal Prompt:

Imagine your ideal place where you can rest, relax and feel grounded. Describe this place in detail.

What do you see? What sounds do you hear? Can you taste anything? What do you smell? How do you feel in your body as you imagine yourself in this space?
